Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton Region Schools

Education in the Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton region is highly regarded with many facilities highly ranked nationally and a history of encouraging students to excel in their chosen fields.

The Rockhampton Grammar School, for example, is a co-educational combined school, serving years P-12. It is ranked among the Top Schools in Queensland and one of the Best Country Schools in Australia by The Australian newspaper. It is Central Queensland’s best performing school.

In 2019, just over half (55.5%) of the 21,190 primary and secondary school students in the region attended government schools; however, students are more likely to attend government schools during primary school years (73.3%).

Many residents continued their education beyond secondary school with more than 50,000 people aged 15 years and over having a post-school educational qualification at the time of the 2016 Census.

Primary Education

With a diverse range of primary schools across the Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton region, you’ll be able to find the perfect match for your child/ren. Schools range from small, mixed-year level country schools to large urban schools bound by catchment areas with multiple classes from prep through to Year 6.

Secondary Education

You and your child/ren will be impressed by the subjects on offer in our local state, independent or private secondary schools which also provide opportunities for students to combine schooling with traineeships, work experience and university courses. Boarding school facilities are also available at some locations.

Combined primary and secondary non-state schools

Local private schools, including Catholic and independent non-denominational Christian and secular schools, cater for students from prep through to Year 12 in a variety of settings.

Special Education

Special Education Programs offered at individual schools cater for a diversity of support services and programs for young people. For example, a number of state schools have a purpose built special education unit to support students with vision impairment, hearing impairment, speech language impairment and autistic spectrum disorder, and more.

There are two schools based in Rockhampton that provide educational programs for students whose special learning needs require intensive support and have been identified through the Educational Adjustment Process.
