Job Opportunities in Central Queensland

13 April 2021

Over 3,500 people are needed to fill the 3,500 jobs identified by Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) across Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gladstone, Emerald and the Central Queensland region.

There is an existing need to build new residential developments to meet the demands of workers who are already relocating from within Queensland, interstate and overseas. Workers are also needed to supply the major infrastructure projects underway or planned in Central Queensland.

Over $3.5 billion worth of infrastructure projects commenced across the Central Queensland region in 2019 generating opportunities for regional business and local workforce. In 2020, as projects continue to progress or new projects begin, the search is on for more workers to fill the construction, supply and other jobs being generated by this activity.

Local industry participation commitments range from 65% up to 80%, so the time has never been better for job seekers in the Central Queensland region to be gearing up to work in this field.

Major projects around Rockhampton include Rookwood Weir (underway), major highway upgrades north and west of the city (underway) as well as the Rockhampton Ring Road (planning phase). Through the development of Eden Bann and Rookwood Weirs on the Fitzroy River, the region can further the agricultural industry’s position as a major agricultural ‘food bowl’ to the region and beyond.

The Rockhampton Ring Road is a major infrastructure project to improve road safety and provide strength to the region’s economy. It is currently in the planning phase which will see the completion of a business case for the road construction project in late 2020.

North of Yeppoon, in the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area, the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative is about investing, building and training. As the training areas are enhanced and as Singapore’s training activities increase, local jobs and opportunities for local business are waiting to be filled.  Read more on the project.

Also north of Yeppoon, is the Clarke Creek Wind and Solar Project. The project is currently in the feasibility phase with construction planned to commence by the end of 2019. Goldwind Australia and Lacour Energy have launched the Local Business Participation Program for the 800 MW Clarke Creek Wind Farm, a key initiative to identify capability and capacity in the local community and maximise opportunities for local participation. Read the media releases to find out more or go to the Industry Capability Network (ICN) Gateway to submit an Expression of Interest.

West of Emerald, the Carmichael Coal Mining Project is underway with jobs and contract opportunities for local workers and businesses for a wide range of skills, operations and service contracts. To register your interest, click here. Click here for work packages.

Supporting this growth, CQUniversity, which offers both higher education and TAFE qualifications, now trains upwards of 40,000 students at multiple campuses in Queensland and interstate, including Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
